Things I don't love about writing

Synopses. Trying to compact a whole book that I have spent hours and days and weeks and even years writing into a short snippet that's supposed to sound exciting or at least interesting. But it can't be helped. I have to write them, and what's worse, make them up on the fly when people ask me what my book is about. I can sound quite eloquent when I have a minute to review it and think it over, but in person, it can get sketchy. It usually goes something like this.

Friend: What's the book about?

Me: Um, well, mermaids, and other fairy tale creatures, but it's not dumb. It's actually really good.

That's about it. Super clear and concise, I know. Who wouldn't want to read that book? It's not just me, my husband is even worse.

Husband: My wife's book is getting published!

Coworkers: Really? What's it about?

Husband: Well, I guess this makes ma a horrible husband, but I haven't actually read it.

Coworker: *facepalm*

That's right. My husband hasn't even read it. Granted, it's not his genre, but still. But before we get out the pitchforks, he is supportive in other ways, like bringing me chocolate.

I'll figure it out eventually, for now let my know what you look for in a synopsis. Which matters more the synopsis or the cover art?
